UKDMOS is a key output of the UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy. The overall aim of the UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy (UKMMAS) is to shape the UK’s capability, within national and international waters, to: "provide, and respond, within a changing climate, to, the evidence required for sustainable development within a clean, healthy, safe, productive and biologically diverse marine ecosystem and within one generation to make a real difference."

The technical build of UKDMOS has been developed by MARIS (www.maris.nl) making use of OpenLayers software and Javascript. Developed services have relied heavily on outputs from the European funded SeaDataNet project which is a standardized distributed system for managing the large and diverse data sets collected by the oceanographic fleets and the new automatic observation systems.

The submission and updating of UKDMOS content is funded by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra).

Management of UKDMOS, including the maintenance and updating of content is conducted by the Marine Environmental Data and Information Network.

UKDMOS relies on the use of standardised terms or 'controlled vocabularies' to ensure consistency. Further details are available from the British Oceanographic Data Centre and the vocabulary server is available here.  A thesaurus of the parameter groups is also available.

Other resources to aid the coordination of surveys and therefore save resources include:

The POGO international cruise planning database and the UK Cruise inventry. Planned cruises may be searched in the later by selecting 'scheduled' from the status drop down list.

The Eurofleets project aims to provide coordination across European Union research fleets and deliver cost effective use of their facilities.
