About UKDMOS

coastline

Built to overcome difficulties arising from the lack of information on marine monitoring around the UK, UKDMOS is designed for the whole marine community.

Intended to be of use to a variety of needs including those of the European Global Ocean Observing System (EuroGOOS) and the Global Climate Observing System (GCOS), UKDMOS is designed in particular as a tool to assist the coordination of UK monitoring programmes for the UK Marine Monitoring and Assessment Strategy (UKMMAS) facilitating:

  • Policy makers and organisations to maintain an overview of monitoring programmes for which they are responsible.
  • Organisations to identify where resources may be better coordinated: e.g. where additional samples may be taken on behalf of another organisation or where ship time may be shared.
  • An analysis of whether data from UK monitoring programmes will be geographically and temporally sufficient to provide robust assessments of the marine environment for national and international legislation and objectives.

In 2010 the UKMMAS protocols database were integrated into UKDMOS.
